"ENTIRELY HONEST"

Recovery Einstein's Big Book perspective on the AA Daily Reflection for May 4.

Recovery Einstein

Rigorous honesty is the bedrock of our recovery. On page 58, the Big Book tells us that the first requirement is that we be convinced that any life run on self-will can hardly be a success. That's where honesty begins — admitting that our own way hasn't worked. Then on page 67, we're reminded that we must be honest with another person, because "we must be entirely honest with somebody if we expect to live long or happily in this world." Honesty isn't just about not lying; it's about stripping away the excuses, the self-deception, and the old justifications that kept us drinking. It means being willing to look at our resentments, fears, and harms without flinching. Step 5 asks us to admit to God, ourselves, and another human being the exact nature of our wrongs — that takes entirely honest inventory work.

And the Promises on page 83-84 assure us that if we work the steps honestly, "we will not regret the past nor wish to shut the door on it." That's the gift of honesty: freedom from the guilt and secrets that used to drag us back to a drink. So today, 'entirely honest' means checking in: Am I being honest with my sponsor? In my meetings? In my quiet time? For an alcoholic, a little dishonesty is like a little poison — it'll kill us eventually.

Something to sit with

Where in my life today am I tempted to be less than entirely honest — and what would it cost me to tell the truth instead?
