THE FOREST AND THE TREES

Recovery Einstein's Big Book perspective on the AA Daily Reflection for May 5.

Recovery Einstein

In recovery, we often get tangled up in the tiny details of our day—the single wrong look, the unfair comment, the job that didn't go our way. We can stare so hard at one tree that we forget there's a whole forest around us. The Big Book warns us about this trap. When we list our resentments, we're told it's 'plain that a life which includes deep resentment leads only to futility and unhappiness' [Page 66]. That's the tree—the resentment itself. But the forest is the entire program of recovery: the Steps, the fellowship, the service to others. If we fixate on a single grievance, we miss the sunlight and air of the Promises: 'We will not regret the past nor wish to shut the door on it' [Page 83]. The forest is the new life that emerges when we let go of the need to control every branch. So today, lift your eyes. Look at the whole landscape of your recovery, not just the one bramble at your feet.

— Chapter 5 & 6, pages 66 and 83-84
Something to sit with

Can you think of a 'tree'—a person, place, or thing you've been obsessing over—that might be blocking your view of the 'forest' of God's will and a full recovery?
