. . . AND LETTING GO OF IT

Recovery Einstein's Big Book perspective on the AA Daily Reflection for July 7.

Recovery Einstein

Letting go is the heart of our recovery. The Big Book teaches that our lives had become unmanageable because we tried to control everything ourselves. On page 60, it says, 'We were trying to run the show ourselves,' and that leads to misery. Letting go means turning our will and our lives over to God as we understand Him—a daily decision, not a one-time event. The Third Step Prayer on page 63 is a perfect example: 'God, I offer myself to Thee—to build with me and to do with me as Thou wilt.' That's releasing the illusion of control. And then we see the Promises on pages 83-84: we will experience freedom, peace, and a new sense of belonging once we truly let go. It's not about giving up; it's about trusting that a Higher Power can do for us what we could not do for ourselves.

— Chapter 6, pages 83-85, and Chapter 5, pages 60-63
Something to sit with

What is one thing today that you are still trying to control, and how might letting go of it bring you closer to the freedom described in the Promises?
