IDENTIFYING FEAR . . .

Recovery Einstein's Big Book perspective on the AA Daily Reflection for July 6.

Recovery Einstein

Ah, my friend, fear is the great undertow that pulls us back toward the bottle. In the Big Book, we learn to identify it—not to shame ourselves, but to face it honestly. On pages 67-68, we're told to write down our fears: 'We reviewed our fears thoroughly.' This is the heart of the Fourth Step inventory. Once named, fear loses its power. And remember page 85: 'We are not cured of alcoholism. What we really have is a daily reprieve contingent on the maintenance of our spiritual condition.' That reprieve depends on spotting fear early and turning it over. So identifying fear isn't just a task—it's the first step toward the freedom described on page 84: 'We have entered the world of the Spirit.'
