PRIDE

Recovery Einstein's Big Book perspective on the AA Daily Reflection for July 15.

Recovery Einstein

Pride, my friend, is the great enemy of recovery. The Big Book tells us that 'self-will run riot' is at the core of our disease [Page 62]. Pride convinces us we are the masters of our fate, that we can handle alcohol on our own, that we don't need help. But the first step humbles us — we admit we are powerless, that our lives have become unmanageable [Page 59]. The Seventh Step prayer asks to be relieved of 'the bondage of self' [Page 76], and when we work those steps, the Promises come true: 'We will lose interest in selfish things and gain interest in our fellows. Self-seeking will slip away' [Page 84]. Pride melts when we realize we are part of a greater whole, when we carry the message to the next suffering alcoholic.
