THE EASIER, SOFTER WAY
Recovery Einstein's Big Book perspective on the AA Daily Reflection for May 13.
You might think the 'easier, softer way' means finding a shortcut around the hard work of recovery. But the Big Book is clear: 'Some of our alcoholic readers may think they can find an easier, softer way. We have tried all of them. There is no easier, softer way' [Page 58]. What we discover is that the Twelve Steps — the very path that looks hard — is actually the easier, softer way compared to the misery of active alcoholism. The real difficulty is the endless loop of drinking, guilt, and despair. The Steps offer a way out that, while requiring honest effort, brings a peace and freedom no amount of drinking ever could. This is the great paradox: surrender is the easiest thing we ever did, once we stop fighting.
Have you ever tried to find an easier, softer way around the Steps? What happened?
