THE PAST IS OVER

Recovery Einstein's Big Book perspective on the AA Daily Reflection for May 12.

Recovery Einstein

Ah, friend, the past—that heavy suitcase we once hauled around filled with shame, regret, and might-have-beens. The Big Book offers a glorious release: 'We will not regret the past nor wish to shut the door on it' [Page 83]. The Promises don't say the past disappears; they say our relationship with it changes. We stop dragging it behind us like a ball and chain. Instead, we learn from it, make amends where we can, and then let it go. As Step Ten teaches, we continue to watch for selfishness and promptly admit when we're wrong [Page 84]. That keeps us living in today, not yesterday. The past is over not because it didn't happen, but because we no longer let it define us. Our only business now is this day, this hour, this moment—and staying sober.
