HITTING BOTTOM

Recovery Einstein's Big Book perspective on the AA Daily Reflection for January 16.

Recovery Einstein

Hitting bottom isn't a fall—it's a foundation. The Big Book describes it as the moment when the alcoholic finally sees that they cannot manage their own life, that they are 'restless, irritable, and discontented' unless they can again experience the ease and comfort of drinking [Page xxviii]. It's not about how low you go; it's about when you become willing. On page 42, it says the alcoholic cannot picture life without alcohol, and on page 43, that they 'will be unable to stop' on their own. That's the bottom: a complete admission of hopelessness that opens the door to acceptance. And once you embrace that, the promises on pages 83-84 show just how radically life can change. Remember, your bottom is the place where you lay down your shovel.

— The Doctor's Opinion, pages xxviii-xxxii; Chapter 3, pages 42-43
Something to sit with

Have you considered whether your own 'bottom' was more about a loss of control than a loss of things—and if so, how did that shift your willingness to seek help?
