Big Book Page 83: Where the Promises Begin
One page from Into Action that gets read aloud in meetings all over the world.
Page 83 of the Big Book (Alcoholics Anonymous, 4th Edition) may be the most quoted page in the whole book. It sits in the chapter Into Action, right in the heart of Step Nine, and it carries two treasures. The first is the line so many of us have underlined: 'The spiritual life is not a theory. We have to live it.' (page 83). The second is the beginning of the Ninth Step Promises, which open at the bottom of the page: 'If we are painstaking about this phase of our development, we will be amazed before we are half way through' (page 83).
Those Promises are the words countless groups read aloud at meetings. 'We are going to know a new freedom and a new happiness. We will not regret the past nor wish to shut the door on it' (page 83). They run from the bottom of page 83 onto page 84, and they describe, plainly and specifically, what begins to happen in us when we do the work of making amends. If you searched for page 83, you probably heard one of these lines somewhere and wanted to find its home. This is it.
What Page 83 Is Actually About
Context matters here. Page 83 is about making amends to the people closest to us, especially our families. The page just before it compares the alcoholic to a tornado roaring through the lives of others (page 82), and page 83 answers the alcoholic who thinks that simply staying sober is enough. The book tells of a farmer who climbs out of his cyclone cellar, finds his home ruined, and cheerfully remarks that at least the wind stopped blowing (page 82). That is us if we get sober and never repair the damage. So the book is blunt with us: 'Yes, there is a long period of reconstruction ahead' (page 83). We take the lead. A mumbled apology will not fill the bill. We sit down with the family, look honestly at the past without criticizing them, and ask each morning that our Creator show us the way of 'patience, tolerance, kindliness and love' (page 83).
The Spiritual Life Is Not a Theory
Right in the middle of that family discussion comes the sentence that made this page famous: 'The spiritual life is not a theory. We have to live it.' (page 83). The book applies it immediately. We should not preach spiritual matters at our families or push the program on them. They will change in time, because our behavior will convince them more than our words ever could (page 83). Many of us call this a living amends. We stop announcing that we are different and start being different, one ordinary day at a time. Page 83 is where the Big Book tells us that amends are something we live, not something we say.
Where the Promises Begin, and What They Ask of Us
Notice that the Promises open with a condition. 'If we are painstaking about this phase of our development' (page 83) points straight back at the amends work described above. The Promises are not attached to mere sobriety; they are attached to Step Nine. Then comes the sweep of them: a new freedom, a new happiness, and the assurance that 'We will comprehend the word serenity and we will know peace' (page 83). They continue onto page 84, where the book anticipates our doubt: 'Are these extravagant promises? We think not.' (page 84). They come 'sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly' (page 84), and 'They will always materialize if we work for them' (page 84). That last line is the quiet engine of the whole passage. The Promises are a description of results, and the work is ours to do.
Living Page 83 Today
We do not have to rebuild everything today. The Big Book reminds us two pages later that what we really have is a 'daily reprieve contingent on the maintenance of our spiritual condition' (page 85). So today we can take the lead in one small act of reconstruction: a kind word where we used to criticize, showing up where we used to disappear, sweeping our side of the street without inspecting anyone else's. Bring page 83 to your sponsor or your group and talk it through. Read it slowly, out loud if you can. The spiritual life is not a theory, and neither is this page. We live it, and the Promises begin to come true.
Quick answers
What page do the Promises start on in the Big Book?
The Ninth Step Promises begin at the bottom of page 83 of Alcoholics Anonymous, 4th Edition, and continue onto page 84. They open with the words 'If we are painstaking about this phase of our development, we will be amazed before we are half way through' (page 83). Many groups read both pages aloud at meetings.
What does 'The spiritual life is not a theory. We have to live it' mean?
This line appears on page 83, in the middle of the Big Book's guidance on making amends to our families. It means recovery is shown in behavior, not talk; the book says our behavior will convince our families more than our words (page 83). Many of us describe this as making a living amends.
What chapter of the Big Book is page 83 in?
Page 83 is in Chapter 6, 'Into Action,' which walks through Steps Five through Eleven. The page falls in the Step Nine discussion, focusing on amends to family and the long period of reconstruction ahead (page 83).
Are the Big Book Promises guaranteed?
The book asks the question itself: 'Are these extravagant promises? We think not.' (page 84). It says they are fulfilled 'sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly' and that 'They will always materialize if we work for them' (page 84). The condition is being painstaking about the amends work of Step Nine (page 83).
