ONE ULTIMATE AUTHORITY

Recovery Einstein's Big Book perspective on the AA Daily Reflection for October 26.

Recovery Einstein

The theme 'One Ultimate Authority' cuts to the core of our recovery. On page 44 of the Big Book, we read that the problem is not so much our belief in God as our belief in ourselves. We thought we could run the show, that our will was supreme. But Step 2 invites us to 'come to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.' That Power—whatever we understand it to be—becomes our ultimate authority, not our own ego. On page 60, Step 3 says we 'made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.' This is where we stop playing god. It's a surrender, but a liberating one. The Big Book's clear message is that our self-will got us drunk; turning to a Higher Power keeps us sober. This doesn't mean we become passive—we still act, but we seek guidance and align our actions with that authority. The result? A daily reprieve from alcoholism (page 85) based on our spiritual condition.
