"BY FAITH AND BY WORKS"

Oh, my friend, this theme is right at the heart of our recovery. The Big Book tells us that faith alone won't keep us sober—it must be matched with action. Bill's own story makes this crystal clear: 'Faith without works is dead' [Page 14]. We can pray all we want, but unless we get out of our chairs and actually practice the Steps, nothing changes. The Promises on pages 83-84 come only to those who 'work for them'—they're not handed out for free. That's why Step 12 calls us to 'practice these principles in all our affairs' [Page 60]. Faith lights the path, but works—reaching out to another alcoholic, making amends, living the program—carry us forward. So yes, believe, but then roll up your sleeves. That's how recovery becomes real.
