GOING WITH THE FLOW

Recovery Einstein's Big Book perspective on the AA Daily Reflection for November 6.

Recovery Einstein

Ah, 'going with the flow' — that sounds so easy, doesn't it? But for an alcoholic, our natural instinct is to fight the current, to insist on being the captain of a ship we've already wrecked. The Big Book tells us on page 60 that we admitted we were powerless and that our lives had become unmanageable. That's the first step in stopping the fight. Going with the flow means accepting that we are not in charge — and that's a relief, not a defeat. On page 63, we find the Third Step Prayer: 'God, I offer myself to Thee — to build with me and to do with me as Thou wilt.' That's surrender, and surrender is the beginning of a new kind of movement, one that doesn't exhaust us.

— Chapter 5, pages 60-63
