BEGIN WHERE YOU ARE

Recovery Einstein's Big Book perspective on the AA Daily Reflection for January 4.

Recovery Einstein

The Big Book teaches us that recovery begins right now, exactly where we stand. On page 58 it says, 'Half measures availed us nothing. We stood at the turning point.' There’s no need to wait until we feel ready or have our lives sorted — we start with Step One, admitting we are powerless and that our lives have become unmanageable [Page 59]. The Third Step Prayer on page 63 is a perfect example: 'God, I offer myself to Thee — to build with me and to do with me as Thou wilt.' That’s beginning where you are, right in the mess, and turning it over. Later, on page 68, we read, 'We asked His protection and care with complete abandon.' So this theme is about taking action now — not tomorrow, not after one more drink — but beginning this very moment with the willingness to follow the path that has worked for millions.

— Chapter 5, pages 58-63 and Chapter 6, pages 68-76
