WHEN FAITH IS MISSING

When faith is missing, the Big Book offers a gentle hand rather than a stern lecture. In Chapter 4, 'We Agnostics,' it says, 'When we became alcoholics, crushed by a self-imposed crisis we could not postpone or evade, we had to fearlessly face the proposition that either God is everything or else He is nothing. God either is or He isn't. What was our choice to be?' [Page 53] This isn't a demand to believe—it's an invitation to be willing. The book assures us that 'we found that as soon as we were able to lay aside prejudice and express even a willingness to believe in a Power greater than ourselves, we commenced to get results' [Page 46]. Faith isn't a prerequisite; it's a gift that grows from action. Start with the willingness to try the Steps, and the faith will follow—often when you least expect it.
