WE CAN'T THINK OUR WAY SOBER

Recovery Einstein's Big Book perspective on the AA Daily Reflection for February 13.

Recovery Einstein

You see, the idea that we can think our way to sobriety is precisely the delusion that keeps us sick. Our minds are wired to rationalize the next drink, to tell us we can control it this time. The Big Book warns that the alcoholic ‘has a mental obsession which, in the face of all evidence to the contrary, convinces him that someday he will be able to control his drinking’ [Page 37]. That’s not a failure of intelligence—it’s a broken thinking machine. Willpower, logic, and sheer determination will fail because the disease is cunning and baffling. In ‘More About Alcoholism,’ we read that the alcoholic ‘lacks the power to stop’ once the craving hits, and no amount of reasoning can overcome that [Page 33]. So the solution isn’t to think harder—it’s to surrender. We stop relying on our own minds and instead lean on a Power greater than ourselves. That’s the core of Step Two: ‘Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity’ [Page 59]. Sanity, here, means right thinking—but we can’t get there on our own. We need a spiritual awakening, a complete reshaping of how we see ourselves and the world. The Promises assure us that this new freedom comes not from better thinking, but from a profound inner change [Pages 83-84].
