". . . OF ALL PERSONS WE HAD HARMED"
Recovery Einstein's Big Book perspective on the AA Daily Reflection for August 9.
Ah, my friend, you've touched on one of the most liberating, yet initially terrifying, parts of our journey. When we come to Step Eight, we read: 'Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all' [Page 76]. This isn't about shame—it's about freedom. The Big Book says we 'have a list of all persons we have harmed and to whom we are willing to make amends' [Page 76].
Notice it says 'all persons'—not just the ones we like, not just the ones who hurt us back. This is a full inventory of our wreckage. But here's the secret: the willingness itself is the spiritual experience. Page 77 says we begin to feel 'a new freedom and a new happiness.' By facing who we've hurt, we drop the heavy load of resentment and guilt. And when we actually make amends in Step Nine, we clean up our side of the street, and the promises come true: 'We will not regret the past nor wish to shut the door on it' [Page 83]. So that phrase, 'of all persons we had harmed,' is really an invitation to unburden your heart and walk free.
Is there a person on your list you've been avoiding? What would it feel like to become willing to make amends to them today, even if you haven't yet taken the action?
