LOVE AND FEAR AS OPPOSITES
Recovery Einstein's Big Book perspective on the AA Daily Reflection for April 17.
In recovery, we often discover that fear is the exact opposite of love. The Big Book teaches us that fear is a core defect that blocks us from God's will and from genuine connection with others. In our Fourth Step inventory, we are told to list our fears—fear of people, economic insecurity, of being inadequate—and examine how they drove our drinking [Page 67-68]. These fears are rooted in self-will and the illusion that we can control our lives alone. The Seventh Step prayer asks God to remove our defects, including fear, so we can be filled with His love and light [Page 76]. When fear is removed, love naturally flows. The Promises describe a life where we are no longer afraid, where we intuitively know how to handle situations that used to baffle us [Page 84]. That is love in action—the willingness to trust God and serve others without selfish motives. So every day, we choose: live in fear, or live in love through God's grace.
